Brief

SHE-LD offers a range of services specifically designed for middle-aged women who may have gynecological issues. These services aim to create a comfortable and convenient testing environment, ultimately promoting early detection and improving their gynecological health.

About

Gynecopathy

Gynecopathy is a world wide problem

Gynecopathy is a general term for common reproductive system diseases among women, including uterine diseases, vaginal diseases, cervical diseases, etc.

In Europe and North America, the incidence rate of gynecological diseases in women is less than 31%.

In most countries in sub Saharan Africa, 40 out of 48 are the leading cause of cancer death among women due to cervical cancer.

The incidence rate of gynecological diseases is more than 87.6%.

CHINA

OCCIDENT

AFRICA

The incidence rate of cervical cancer among Chinese women is up to 1/5 of the world.

Main causes & effects

WHY

Not paying attention to personal hygiene

Work overload, sedentary and immobile

Lack of understanding of cleaning methods

HOW

Lower abdominal pain and pruritus

Mental depression and sleep disorders

Reproductive system dysfunction

Early inspection is important

In the early stages, patients typically do not experience significant or noticeable discomfort, which often leads to the condition being easily overlooked or ignored.

As a result, many women may remain unaware of the onset of the disease, only discovering its presence during routine gynecological inspections or health check-ups. This lack of early symptoms can delay diagnosis and treatment, making regular medical assessments crucial for early detection and effective management of gynecological conditions.

How Might We

Increase women's gynecopathy awareness

Enable women to monitor their condition anytime

Provide a comfortable inspection process

Reduce their delay of undergo gynecological inspection

What’s stopping them?

We conducted in-depth interviews with women aged 40-60 who are hesitant to undergo gynecological exams despite experiencing discomfort. Our main focus was to understand their fears, discomfort, and reluctance to visit traditional healthcare settings. Through these interviews, we identified three key insights into why women tend to delay seeking medical attention.

Hospital system & Doctors

The workload of doctors is too large, so they can't always maintain a good state when facing patients, and the registration system of hospitals is very inconvenient for patients to undergo regular physical inspection.

Other Personal reasons

  • Lack of female nursing knowledge

  • No time to go to the hospital

  • For fear of being judged by others

  • Bad past inspection experience

  • Expensive medical expenses

  • Conservative thought

Morality & Culture background

In the context of Chinese traditional culture, gynecological diseases are often related to women's sexuality and impurity. Therefore, many conservative women face intangible moral pressure and refuse to go to the hospital for inspection.

System Map

Guided by the insights we synthesized insights from user interviews, we generated 3 interrelated solutions.

Together, these solutions form a cohesive system designed to provide comprehensive support for women with potential gynecological diseases.

A gynecological inspection vehicle that provides basic gynecological inspection and can send samples to the hospital quickly.

Solution3

An app that shares gynecological scientific articles and videos, and enables female patients to exchange their experience.

Gynecological self-test product that allows people to easily detect gynecological diseases.

Service Blueprint

To gain a better understanding of the entire service process, we created a service blueprint and system map to visualize the service journey and service workflow, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience.

Takeaways

  • Social Impact:

This project drives a cultural shift that places greater emphasis on women's health and well-being, giving me a deeper understanding of the responsibility designers bear in advocating for social change.

  • Collaboration:

Our team's diverse backgrounds plays a crucial role in shaping this project. This multidisciplinary approach not only enriches our discussions, but also enables us to explore more innovative solutions.

  • Time Management:

Working within a limited two-week period prompts us to use agile methods to simplify our workflow, while enabling us to quickly make decisions and focus on the most important solutions.

Solution1 - Gynecological Inspection Vehicle

The gynecological inspection vehicle is aimed at providing mobile gynecological health services. It can quickly collect samples and send them to the hospital for testing, creating a fast and convenient inspection process. This not only avoids the cumbersome hospital appointment process but also provides women with a more comfortable and supportive inspection environment, promoting early detection and prevention.

Placed in locations frequently visited by women aged 40-60, such as community centers and square dance parks.

Model

Details

The vehicle is equipped with a retractable shade and seats, providing a comfortable social and resting area for women, and hoping to attract more women to actively learn about the inspection services of the vehicle.

Retractable Shed

A projector that plays educational videos on gynecological health. These videos aim to raise awareness and provide valuable knowledge on various gynecological issues, enhancing women’s self-care awareness.

Projector

A vending machine placed outside the vehicle for women to purchase self inspection tools and other related health products. Enable women to easily access necessary healthcare resources, promote early detection.

Usability Test

Given that the app interface is only a small part of this overall service experience and the project spanned only two weeks.

Our focus is on quickly verifying the availability of core features to ensure they can provide users with a basic smooth interaction experience, rather than conducting comprehensive and in-depth testing.

Positive

  • Users found the interface simple and intuitive, and they could easily navigate to key functions like booking inspection and product purchasing.

  • Users showed interest in the inspection vehicle and the self-test products.

  • Some users felt that the community page was cluttered with too much content, making it difficult to focus on desired information.
